Astrolabe: Cosmos at Hands

The astrolabe is an ancient astronomical instrument that combines observation, demonstration, timekeeping, and calculation into a multi-functional tool. It is generally believed to have originated in ancient Greece, flourished in the Islamic world, and later spread to Latin Europe for further popularization. The astrolabe was introduced to China twice, by land and sea, and serves as clear evidence of scientific and technological cultural exchanges between the East and the West. Tsinghua University Science Museum (in development) has collaborated with the Museum of the History of Science, University of Oxford, to utilize high-definition images and animations from the collections of both museums to reveal the structure, principles, usage, and history of the astrolabe, showcasing its unique charm. The exhibition is now available online on the homepage of Tsinghua University Science Museum (in development).
